'Splinter Cell' Movie May Be In The Works

Sam Fisher may be the next video game character headed to the big screen. Deadline is reporting that two studios have been in talks with Ubisoft about adapting "Splinter Cell," their popular secret agent series.

According to the report, Ubisoft has spoken with Warner Bros, but now it seems more likely that Paramount will take on the project, as they're already working on the next Jack Ryan film, another Tom Clancy franchise, starring Chris Pine and directed by Kenneth Branaugh.

For those of you unfamiliar with the game series, "Splinter Cell" lets you control Sam Fisher, a gruff and stealthy CIA agent who has starred in six games so far. The latest entry, "Splinter Cell: Blacklist," made a huge splash at the E3 gaming conference earlier this month.

This is only Ubisoft's most recent attempt at bringing one of their characters to the screen. The company produces the "Prince of Persia" games, which resulted in a seriously ill-advised movie starring a tan Jake Gyllenhaal.

For any potential "Splinter Cell" film, Ubisoft is demanding some creative control over the adaptation. This kind of agreement is similar to what Sony signed up for when they bought the rights to another Ubisoft property, "Assassin's Creed," near the end of last year. Ubisoft has been incredibly protective of their licenses since "Prince of Persia" happened, and that trend is continuing with "Splinter Cell."
