Rihanna Has 'A Very Strong Part' In Peter Berg's 'Battleship'

For some, the inclusion of superstar Rihanna in Peter Berg's upcoming "Battleship" stands out as a strange choice. Not for Berg, though. The director spoke with MTV News recently and said that he's surprised that "no one had ever thought to hire Rihanna" before he made the call.

"I was a huge fan of her videos," Berg told MTV at Toy Fair this week. "Obviously she's sexy, but she had this real intensity. I'm like, 'Someone's going to get her.' "

As for his first meeting with Rihanna, Berg remembered: "When I met with her, she came in a T-shirt and jeans, no makeup, very natural. She was like, 'Look, I want to be an actress. Don't kiss my ass. Don't lie to me. Push me. Treat me as you would any other actor. Help make me good.'"

The result? "She is really, really good in 'Battleship,'" said Berg. "She has a very strong part."

Berg said that he's fond of musicians trading in their vocals for lines on a movie set, citing several past success stories of music legends who made the leap to the big screen.

"I've always believed in musicians as actors. I had great success with Tim McGraw in 'Friday Night Lights' and 'The Kingdom.' Musicians have been acting since Frank Sinatra won an Oscar for 'From Here to Eternity,' " he said. "Barbra Streisand, Kris Kristofferson, the late Whitney Houston, I thought, was tremendous in 'The Bodyguard.' As recently as Mariah Carey in 'Precious,' she was great."
