There are only two days left until the 2012 Academy Awards kick off, which means that the frantic last-minute Oscar predictions have begun. MTV Movies and our friends over at NextMovie have been putting our heads together to talk about who we expect to win big at this year's ceremony, and today the last two videos for our informed guesses for Best Picture and Best Director have been revealed.
Unsurprisingly, it seems like "The Artist" is the front-runner in both categories. The little film that could has been both a critical darling and well-received by the public (at least for a black and white silent movie about a silent film star), and it seems fair to assume that it will take home the major Best Picture and Best Director statues as well.
But that's not to say "The Artist" is the film that most deserves the Oscar gold. Click on after the jump to see what other films MTV Movies' Josh Horowitz and NextMovie's Kevin Polowy have to say about who got snubbed and who might be the dark horse winner.
Considering MTV Movies Blog has run a feature on the movies we think should have had that tenth Best Picture nomination, it should come as no surprise that there were a fair number of movies Horowitz and Polowy thought were snubbed this year. Where were "Drive," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "Bridesmaids" when you need them?
As for the Best Director category, the one major snub that Horowitz and Polowy both agreed on was David Fincher for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." I still stand by the argument that he was the most deserving candidate for the Oscar last year, though he ultimately lost to "The King's Speech's" Tom Hooper, so to not even score a nom is a double slight against the master of suspense. And though the Best Director statuette seems like it's Michael Hazanavicius' to lose, the MTV duo predict that Martin Scorsese might not be ruled out of the race just yet for the amazing work he did on "Hugo."
