'Ghost Rider,' 'This Means War,' And More: Double Feature Friday!

If one movie a night is never enough for you and you're looking for a flick to get you in the mood for this week's new release, Double Feature Friday is here to help. This new weekly column takes a look at the week's releases and pairs them with a complimentary film to watch before, after or as a substitution.

"Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" & "Drive Angry"
Nicolas Cage in 3D is not something you just jump into unprepared. For your own personal safety, we have to recommend familiarizing yourself with the pressures and anxieties of seeing Nic Cage projected onto the big screen in all three dimensions. "Drive Angry" in 3D will be enough of a pregame, so that when Cage's head bursts into flames in "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," yours won't do the same.

"This Means War" & "Black Hawk Down"
When it comes to choosing between the two movies where Tom Hardy works as an employee of the United State government, Ridley Scott's 2001 real-life war drama easily edges out the new romantic comedy. Granted you lose out on the romance aspect, the action in "Black Hawk Down" will be a lot more satisfying even without a love triangle. Plus, you'll get to play everyone's favorite game "Who Isn't In 'Black Hawk Down'?" The answer is "no one." Every actor ever is in "Black Hawk Down."

"The Secret World of Arrietty" & "Spirited Away"
When Disney releases an anime, it's safe to assume that the legendary director Hayao Miyazaki is involved. In the case of "The Secret World of Arrietty," you'll have to look a little harder for Miyazaki's name, but he's there as the film's screenwriter. One of his longtime animators, Hiromasa Yonebayashi, takes over as director for this adaptation of "The Borrowers." There is no better way to prepare for "Arrietty" than sitting back and enjoying one of Miyazaki's classics. Since it's Oscar season, we suggest checking out "Spirited Away," the film that won the second ever Best Animated Feature award.

"Thin Ice" & "Fargo"
A down-on-his-luck middle-class sap gets caught up in a criminal plot gone awry in this wintery dark comedy. The log line works perfect for both "Thin Ice" and the Coen Brothers' classic "Fargo," and while the former has earned some decent reviews on its own, the similarities between the two are hard to escape. If you have never seen "Fargo" or haven't watched it in a while, now is the perfect time to catch up with one of the best films of the 90s.
