'Dead Island' Movie, Inspired By Video Game Trailer, Lands At Lionsgate

"Dead Island," the Techland and Deep Silver survival horror video game that hit consoles earlier this month, isn't finished with its global infection campaign. The gaming world, it seems, is not big enough to contain this zombie apocalypse: now, "Dead Island" is set to devour the big screen as well.

Lionsgate has optioned the "Dead Island" movie rights from Deep Silver. But by the sound of things, it seems that the main inspiration for the "Dead Island" film won't be the game itself, but the preliminary "Dead Island" trailer that went viral earlier this year.

"Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck," said Lionsgate's Joe Drake in a press release, which notes that "the trailer will serve as [the movie's] primary creative inspiration." The trailer can be seen here in case you need a refresher.

The story of the video game itself, of course, has little to nothing to do with the "Dead Island" trailer's plot, which chronicles the final few moments of a little girl's life in rewind. The idea of telling a "Dead Island" film from finish to start is kind of cool ? sort of the "Memento" of zombie flicks, if you will ? but is it a misstep to try to recapture that trailer's lightning? Is it even possible to recapture that lightning? Seems to me that the film would be better served feasting on the meat of the actual game, but admittedly, I haven't played it just yet.

If you've played the game already, what do you think: is the trailer enough to sustain a full-fledged "Dead Island" movie, or should producers take a closer look at the game itself for their inspiration? If you aren't familiar with the source material, take a look at 20 minutes of "Dead Island" gameplay footage courtesy of MTV Multiplayer:
