'21 Jump Street' Trailer: Jonah Hill & Channing Tatum Get Schooled

Is "21 Jump Street" just another movie based on an old '80s TV show? Judging by the red-band trailer that was just released for the 2012 big-screen update of the long-ago hit show, we're going to go out on a limb and say it's a whole lot more than that.

Has the trailer left you wondering what that TV show was all about? Click past the jump and we'll school you on all the basics!

?21 Jump Street,? which ran for 5 seasons between 1987 and 1991, starred a baby-faced Johnny Depp as baby-faced cop Tom Hanson. Hanson and his baby-faced cohorts, played by Peter DeLuise, Dustin Nguyen and Holly Robinson (Peete), went undercover as high school students to bust nefarious youths and others who were in dire need of a moral lesson or two. 21 Jump Street was the address of these very cool cops? HQ.

Depp left the show after the 4th season (hardly fading into obscurity), and the role of Main Hunky Young Cop was handled by the slightly less baby-faced Richard Grieco as Dennis Booker. Booker then got his very own spin-off show ? ?Booker? ? which lasted one season.

?21 Jump Street? was co-created by Stephen J. Cannell, the late prolific writer-producer responsible for shows like ?The Rockford Files,? ?The A-Team,? ?Wiseguy,? and one of my personal favorites, ?Hunter.? It seems like Jonah Hill, who co-wrote the ?21JS? movie script and stars alongside Channing Tatum, has honored Cannell?s legacy by not making a spoof. Hill has lovingly nursed this project for years, and he told MTV News that the film is "an entirely new imagination of what '21 Jump Street' is." As much as our 16-year-old selves loved the original, we think that?s not such a bad thing.

Hey everybody, now let?s make a movie based on ?Booker?!
