(Future performs "Tony Montana" at Candlestick Park)
By Nadeska Alexis
Future?s breakout single ?Tony Montana? put the Atlanta rapper on the map last year (even Beyonce listed it as one of her favorite songs of 2011) and the San Francisco 49ers, in particular, became diehard fans of the track. The NFL players spent months warming up to ?Tony Montana,? so when they faced-off against the New Orleans Saints in the NFC playoffs, they enlisted Future to perform his song at kickoff. Future will return to San Francisco?s Candlestick Park on Sunday (January 22) for an encore performance when the 49ers face the New York Giants and he?s certainly looking forward to it. ?It?s a privilege and an honor to be a part of the San Francisco 49ers franchise,? Future tells RapFix.
?I didn?t know how much they loved it, but from my understanding they had been coming out to the song for like 8 months, working out, warming up to the song and they just made it a part of their team,? Future says, about the 49ers decision to reach out to him. ?It feels good to be a part of the franchise right now, to be able to take them to the next level, as their good luck charm.?
According to Future, the 49ers contacted him shortly before their matchup against the Saints, asking if he would play their favorite warm up song live. ?I got a call saying they wanted me to attend the football game and perform at the kickoff, and it was just an honor to be a part of it, with them trying to win the NFC and make it to the Super Bowl."
Despite the honor, Future admits that the offer caught him off guard a bit. ?When I made ?Tony Montana,? the mentality was about reaching higher ground but when you have a song that you did for the club and it also reaches the stadium and it?s touching different people in different ways, that says a lot about music.?
Part of the appeal for the team was the similarity between the song?s title and the name of legendary 49ers quarterback Joe Montana. ?If I get a chance to meet him that?ll be something to put down in history," says Future, who's performance also happened to be his first appearance at an NFL playoff game. ?That was my first time being a part of the playoffs and I was on the field. It was like 102, 000 people, that was the biggest performance I have done thus far in my career."
"It always helps when you?ve got the crowd?s support and it was already a major hit in the stadium. They had already been doing it for like 8 months, so they were just looking for me. They knew the song before they knew me, they was calling me ?Tony?--they didn?t even know my name was Future until I performed it about the third or fourth time. They just knew ?Tony Montana,? they didn?t know who sang it, how I looked or what my name was.?
Although Future is a diehard fan of the Atlanta Falcons, he?s positive that if the 49ers play hard enough, they?ll be headed for the Super Bowl. ?If they go out and get the win and we see them in the Super Bowl, hopefully I?ll be performing then. That?ll be amazing.?
