So... they're going to try to kill their bosses again?
One of the summer's biggest box office surprises, "Horrible Bosses," will likely have a sequel, reuniting the same creative team from the original film. According to the Hollywood Reporter, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the screenwriting team behind the surprise $118 million hit, have just signed on to write the follow-up.
The film's leads, Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis, are all expected to return for the sequel, in addition to the original director, Seth Gordon.
The other big comedy hit from last summer, "Bridesmaids," has also been at the center of sequel talk, but a new report from the Hollywood Reporter claims that Universal is ready to move ahead with a follow-up with or without star and co-writer Kristen Wiig.
Wiig denied any personal plans for a sequel telling THR, "We aren't working on that. [Co-writer] Annie [Mumolo] and I aren't planning a sequel. We are writing something else."
But sources close to Universal have said that Wiig balked at a large offering from the studio, insisting on not making a sequel. The other avenue being discussed is a follow-up that would move away from Wiig's character and focus on a supporting player, la "Get Him to the Greek."
If Universal does move ahead with a "Bridesmaids 2" without Kiig, the source reasons the follow-up would center on Melissa McCarthy's breakout role as Megan.
The studio is no stranger to sequels without their famous leads. Later this year, the "Bourne" series will continue without Matt Damon.
Judd Apatow, who had his biggest box office success ever with "Bridesmaids" commented on the story in a statement to THR saying, "The key is we have to come up with an idea that is as good or better than the first one. We don't want to do it unless it can be great. I don't think anyone has had the brain space to think about it yet. Hopefully that can begin this?year."
Though Apatow didn't say whether he's considering a second "Bridesmaids" without Wiig, THR cited a source close to the situation who said, "I don't think [Apatow] would proceed without Kristen and Annie's full participation."
