Today is a great day for Blu-Ray collectors! The "Jurassic Park" trilogy is now available in all its dino-tastic, awesome old school special effects glory. It's hard to believe that the original "Jurassic Park" came out almost 20 years ago, I remember the trauma/delight of that moviegoing experience like it was yesterday...
To celebrate this excellent event, MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with a few of the film's key players: Ariana Richards (aka Lex) and the multiple award-winning FX masterminds Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett and John Rosengrant. Check out the video below to see what they had to say about their favorite scenes and what the experience meant to them.
"I love revisiting the kitchen scene because it was so intense and I always found it one of the most frightening scenes to watch," Richards said of the scene that sticks out the most in her memory. "There was a moment in there where I needed to save my brother from being killed by one of these things and Steven [Spielberg] came over to me and said, 'Ariana, just scare us. Just let loose.' And I did, and I didn't know I could do it, but he brought things out of me that I didn't know I had."
Richards went on to say that she enjoyed the effect her character had on other young girls, with regard to how Lex's intelligence was portrayed in a positive light versus a negative one.
"I felt really good about it, actually. Being able to play a character who is a young girl who is smart, who is able and who also got to be the heroine of the story as the time went on. Young girls need to know that, that it is fantastic to be smart and to just go for it."
For the FX wizards, Muren, Tippett and Rosengrant, whose resumes are so full of awesome (i.e. they've been part of the success of your favorite movies over the last three decades) it's ridiculous, they're just happy they finished the film on time.
"For me it's sort of the whole thing. Just that we got it done is a miracle and it was so exciting at the time doing it," Muren, whose work you also know from "E.T.," "Willow" and "Twister."
"It was a big deal," added Tippett, the visual effects man behind "Star Wars," "Indiana Jones" and "Starship Troopers," to name a few.
"We were proud of every single character because each one was an opportunity," Rosengrant said, who rocked creature effects on "Aliens," "Terminator" and "Galaxy Quest." "They all were their own personalities; each one was treasured."
