Some interesting news is making its way around the Whedonverse this morning: As if he didn?t already have his hands full helming a little flick called "The Avengers," apparently Joss Whedon has shot a film based on William Shakespeare's play "Much Ado About Nothing."
Whedon?s film of the same name already has a website and the cast is a Who?s Who of Whedon faves, including Amy Acker, Reed Diamond, Alexis Denisof and Nathan Fillion.
What makes us a bit suspicious about the validity of this project, aside from Whedon?s already superheroically hectic schedule, is the fact that it was first announced via Fillion's Twitter account. The "Castle" and "Firefly" actor has been known to prank his million-plus Twitter followers on occasion, but Fillion was quick to assure us that this is no joke. So we have to wonder - what is this "Much Ado" really about?
UPDATE: ?Tis true! In the grand tradition of ?Romeo + Juliet,? ?O? and ?She?s The Man,? Joss Whedon is indeed making a modern filmed adaptation of a Shakespeare play: ?Much Ado About Nothing.?
According to the press release just added to the film?s new web site, ?Much Ado? was shot in black and white over 12 days ?entirely on location in exotic Santa Monica? ? which explains how Whedon was able to fit this mystery project into his already packed schedule.
Kudos to Whedon for pursuing his Shakespearean passion while earning his ?Avengers? paycheck. ?The text is to me a deconstruction of the idea of love,? Whedon said about the comedy, ?which is ironic, since the entire production is a love letter ? to the text, to the cast, even to the house it?s shot in.?
I?m sure many of us Browncoats would have liked to be in that house, given the ?super-impressive? cast. But we?ll just have to wait for early spring, when the film is expected to be finished.
In the meantime, stay close to Movies Blog for news and updates ?About Nothing.?
