Seann William Scott knows what type of character he usually plays. He broke out thanks to the antics of a fast-talking sex maniac, Steve Stifler from the "American Pie" movies, and ended up playing similar characters throughout his career.
The Seann William Scott of "Goon," however, is an entirely different monster, a gentle one. Doug Glatt is good at one thing: kicking the crap out of guys. One thing Doug is not good at is hockey. Despite that combination, the owner of a local Canadian hockey club recruits Doug to save a dying team.
MTV News talked with Scott and his co-star and the film's co-writer Jay Baruchel about the character Doug and why there aren't many hockey movies.
For Doug, Scott simply enjoyed the chance to play a character that had more to him than Stifler. "It was just an awesome experience because it was so well-written, such a huge challenge for me to play a three dimensional character for once," Scott said. "It was much more comforting and enjoyable to play a guy who's nice and a good guy. I think it was easier for me to do that than to play a total jackass."
Baruchel wrote Doug and the film with a very particular viewer in mind. As a young Canadian hockey fan, Baruchel wanted a movie for enthusiasts like himself.
"[Hockey] is part of the reason I get up in the morning. It?s my favorite sport. It?s my religion," Baruchel said. "The marketplace is fairly barren when it comes to hockey flicks. I think there been precious few good ones for most of my life. It was just our chance to give Canadian kids a movie I feel like they've been waiting for, for a long time. Whoever digs this movie, we want them to connect to it, but we made it with a very specific group of people in mind."
