Angelina Jolie's "Maleficent" is finally ready to pounce. The Disney film starts shooting in June, and as we already know, the actress has loved the script from the start. The film, as its title suggests, will show another side of the witch, but that doesn't necessarily mean Princess Aurora is now the bad guy.
"It's not anti-princess," Jolie told EW.com in a new interview. "But it's the first time they're looking at this epic woman... I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn't mean she can't have other [warmer] qualities."
What exactly are those redeeming qualities? Jolie knows it's a bit odd to say "Malificent" will be good for young girls since she is the villain of "Sleeping Beauty," but she believes the character is a "good person" when it comes down to it. She also believes there is a positive message attached to the film: to look at another point of view and see things from a different side. But this doesn't come without its challenges.
"What our challenge will be ? and the script writer has already cracked it ? is to not simplify it, not to just reverse the story but tell a bigger story that doesn't point the finger [at Princess Aurora] either," she teased of her new film's premise.
Jolie says they're experimenting with whether this version of Maleficient will stay true to the one everyone's familiar with in the animated film. "But the horns are the horns ? you can't deny them," she said. "You have to have horns." And Jolie's already been fitted for hers.
